Ulladulla and St Georges Basin fishing spots

Estuary country: St Georges Basin, Lake Conjola and Burrill Lake are famous for very large dusky flathead, with bream, whiting and luderick too. Ulladulla's harbour is the base for summer marlin and mahi mahi and winter tuna off the shelf, while the beaches and headlands produce salmon, tailor and drummer.

1. St Georges Basin

What's good here
Peak in October: dusky flathead, sand whiting, snapper and estuary perch. Also in season: yellowfin bream, luderick and silver trevally.

Note
Coordinate is Sepulchre Island in the basin. A recreational fishing haven with DPIRD artificial reefs: plastics and live poddies on drop-offs for big flathead (release over 70 cm), bream on the reefs.

Wind chop builds quickly across the open basin.

2. Sussex Inlet

Peak in October: dusky flathead, sand whiting and mulloway. Also in season: yellowfin bream, luderick and tailor.
Best tide
Run-in tide for clean water near the mouth; the run-out carries bait past the channel edges.
Best wind
Sheltered channel; strong southerlies make the bar dangerous.
Note
Narrow tidal channel joining the basin to the sea: weed floats for luderick, baits along the edges for bream and flathead, and the deeper bends at night for mulloway.
Safety
Sussex Inlet bar: lifejackets on when crossing; check the TfNSW webcam. Strong tidal currents in the channel.
Zone
No marine park on the channel. Sussex Haven: no nets other than prawn scoop or dip nets and landing nets, and no spearfishing. 3. Lake Conjola entrance

Coordinate is Cunjurong Point at the lake mouth. Known for very big dusky flathead: slow surface lures and swimbaits over the flats and weed edges; nippers for whiting and bream.

The entrance is shallow and changes after floods.

5. Ulladulla Harbour

Sheltered from southerlies; north-easters push swell in.
Note
Working fishing harbour: squid jigs at dawn, floats along the breakwall for luderick and garfish, berley for trevally and bream, and the odd kingfish around the wall in summer.

Commercial and charter vessel traffic; stay off restricted wharf areas. The outer wall washes in big north-east swell.

6. Warden Head, Ulladulla

Rock platforms at the northern edge of Batemans Marine Park: drummer and luderick in the washes, salmon and tailor on metals in the cooler months, kingfish on the reefs by boat.

Exposed platforms: lifejacket strongly advised. The beach ramp is high-tide only and swell dependent.

Batemans Marine Park starts at Bawley Point: the coordinate is just north of the park, the waters south of the point are general use zone, and the Brush Island sanctuary zone lies about 2 km south-east. In peak season at Ulladulla and St Georges Basin in October: sand whiting, dusky flathead, Australian salmon, estuary perch and 4 more. Of the 29 species our NSW South Coast list has for this part of the coast, 8 peak in October 2026 and 14 more are in season.

Peak in October: sand whiting, dusky flathead, Australian salmon, estuary perch, snapper, mulloway, sand and tiger flathead and Australian bass.

Also in season: luderick, yellowfin bream, tailor, rock blackfish, yellowtail kingfish, silver trevally, eastern sea garfish, southern calamari, Australian bonito, tarwhine, leatherjacket, blue swimmer crab, yellowfin tuna and school and eastern king prawns.

Out of season in October: mahi mahi (best Dec–Apr); marlin (best Jan–Apr).

Seen now and then, so not rated: mud crab, mangrove jack, mackerel tuna, Spanish mackerel and cobia.

NSW Recreational Fishing Fee needed to fish NSW saltwater (incl. spearfishing, hand gathering, bait collecting, prawning): $7 3 days, $14 1 month, $35 1 year, $85 3 years (Oct 2026). Exempt: under 18, Aboriginal people, Pensioner Concession Card and DVA TPI/EDA Gold Card holders (other cases, e.g. some DVA payments or a charter or guide with an exemption certificate, are on the exemptions page). Rules at Ulladulla and St Georges Basin

  • Sussex Haven: no nets other than prawn scoop or dip nets and landing nets; Sussex Haven and part of St Georges Basin near the inlet are closed to spearfishing.
  • Lake Conjola and Berringer Lake: no spearfishing from the Roberts Point to Station Point line down to the sea.
  • Tabourie Lake: no hoop or lift nets.
  • Dusky flathead over 70 cm must be released.
  • Batemans Marine Park starts at Bawley Point, at the north end of Murramarang Beach: check zones before fishing south of the point.

  • Sussex Inlet has a coastal bar watched by a TfNSW webcam: lifejackets on when crossing.
  • Shoalhaven is not a declared rock-fishing area, but lifejackets are strongly advised on all ocean rock platforms.
  • Shelf trips from Ulladulla are long runs: carry an EPIRB (required more than 2 nautical miles offshore in NSW).
