All tuskfish: min 30 cm, 6 in total of all tuskfish species (also inside the coral reef fin fish combined limit of 20). The coral reef fin fish closures (Oct/Nov) apply only north of 24°50′S, not in SEQ.

Checked 8 Oct 2026 against the Queensland Government pages: size and possession limits and closed seasons.

Limits are possession limits: they count everything you hold, including any at home in the freezer. In yellow (conservation park) zones: max 2 lines and 2 hooks in total per angler. Green zones: no fishing. All QLD fishing rules

How to catch tuskfish: best bait and rig

  • Crabs (three-spot and other small rock crabs) for blackspot
  • Squid (purple tuskfish love it)
  • Prawn, pilchard cubes and yakka fillet offshore

Tuskfish rig

Paternoster or short running sinker with strong 3/0-5/0 hooks; heavy mono and a stout rod for blackspot near structure.

Good to know about tuskfish

Locals call them "parrot" but they are not parrotfish (true parrotfish have fused beaks and are rarely caught; 25 cm/5 per species). Coastwatch mentions peak Jun-Nov.
